Located in The Presidio National Park, this four-building, one million square foot project houses over 1,000 employees. The campus houses an extensive suite of cutting-edge digital effects creation and editing equipment.

RLS provided technology budget preparation and cost control for the $36 million IT budget. Return-on-investment analyses and administration of a formal, “government grade” procurement process resulted in significant savings to the client. Audio-visual system design encompassed over ninety rooms in three buildings, including a Webcast Studio requiring specialized acoustic and interior design services. A high-level Technical Program Document was required for the project.
RLS also designed a Converged Network to host voice, data, and video on a common IP platform. The wireless component provided high bandwidth service throughout the three-building campus and the multi-level parking structure.
Technology Consultant
Needless to say, the technology infrastructure for LDAC was unparalleled in its capability to support the “bleeding edge” requirements of Lucasfilm, Industrial Light and Magic, and LucasArts, all of whom were relocated to this new Campus. To prepare for this massive technology relocation, we supported Lucasfilm’s various IT groups by performing surveys of existing facilities and leading strategic visioning sessions to define specific requirements for the new operations and supporting systems.
As Prime Technology Consultant for LucasFilm, RLS was responsible for administering a $36 million IT budget. We conducted return on investment analyses associated with VoIP implementation and deployment of fiber-to-the-desktop. Extensive thermal load calculations were required during equipment selection to insure adequate infrastructure for the massive Render Farm housed within the Data Center. Ultimately, cost control measures involved development and administration of a formal, “government grade” procurement process which resulted in significant cost savings to the Client.
Audiovisual
Audio-visual system design encompassed over ninety rooms in three buildings. A high-level Technical Program Document was required for the project. RLS provided design for a Webcast Studio, including interior architecture and acoustics. Design oversight was also provided for all Media Production systems, including the Premier Theatre and multiple screening rooms.
We developed an extensive Technical Program Document, created and maintained a detailed consolidated IT budget that included all audiovisual and media production systems, and facilitated a competitive vendor selection process, which ultimately affected a significant cost savings to the Client. In designing the converged network we helped the Client evaluate key technologies and make critical procurement decisions.
Our AV scope included:
- AV System Design for 90+ Rooms throughout 3 Buildings
- Webcast Studio Design, including Interior Architecture and Acoustics
- Design Oversight for all Media Production Systems, including the Premier Theater and multiple Screening Rooms
Converged Network
The Converged Network hosted voice, data, and video on a common IP platform. The wireless component presented unique challenges due to the high bandwidth requirements and extensive distribution of 340+ wireless access points throughout the three-building campus, and the multi-level parking structure.
Located in The Presidio National Park, this four-building one million square foot project showcases RLS’ multidisciplinary technology expertise. As Prime Technology Consultant for LucasFilm, we were responsible for administering a 36 million dollar IT budget, providing direct reports to John Koenig, CIO and Michelene Chau, CEO. Our responsibilities to Executive management included:
- Technology budget preparation and cost control.
- Return on investment analyses associated with VoIP implementation and deployment of fiber-to-the-desktop.
- Converged Network Design hosting voice, data, and video on a common IP platform.
- Development and administration of a formal, “government grade”, procurement process that included hosting a Technology Showcase for top Networking Companies, RFQ preparation, RFP preparation, Bid Document preparation and bidding administration, Bidder Interviews, and formal Bidder notification.
Needless to say, the network for LDAC was unparalleled in its capability to support the “bleeding edge” requirements of Lucasfilm, Industrial Light and Magic, and LucasArts, all of whom were relocated to this new Campus (multi 100 Gbps trunks between buildings was just the beginning).
